SDII researchers are assisting on a Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) issue team to develop improved standards for seismic design of diaphragms in buildings. The efforts of the issue team (IT9) are intended to become a part of the 2020 edition of the model standard for seismic provisions produced by the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). The BSSC is part of the National Institute of Building Science (NIBS) and has been facilitating the production of the model seismic standard for several code cycles (see 2020 NEHRP Project at NIBS). The last cycle saw significant changes to diaphragm design as summarized in a STRUCTURE magazine article by SK Ghosh.
