Researchers at Johns Hopkins University (Rajshri Chidambaram Muthu Kumar and Ben Schafer) are investigating the vibration performance of FastFloor’s single module (10 ft x 40 ft) and full bay (30 ft x 40 ft) floor systems using detailed shell finite element modeling, with a focus on the effects of human-induced walking loads. Alternative structural detailing – such as the inclusion of angle blocking, plate stiffeners, cross braces and raised access floor are considered to further stabilize the assembly, improve the modal frequencies, and potentially improve the accelerations experienced from human walking. Ongoing work is validating the models using the benchmark walking experiments performed at West Virginia University (Sahabeddin Rifai and Onur Avci).
