The SDII team is pleased to announce that our collaboration with the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF) and the American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC) to develop the FastFloor Commercial building system has been awarded Phase 2 funding. FastFloor is a new, modular steel floor framing and diaphragm system for commercial building structures with broad applicability, including high seismic zones. The proposed ‘FastFloor’ system for commercial buildings has key benefits of increasing the speed of construction, including eliminating the pouring of a concrete deck. This type of system is key to achieving the goals of the AISC Need for Speed initiative to reduce the time from conception to occupancy for steel building structures and provides a unique pathway to improve the sustainability of steel construction.
Phase I investigated the viability of a prototype design using computational simulation and experimental testing. Phase II will conduct a wide range of prototype structural analyses, including gravity loading, vibration and acoustics tests, viability of the flooring’s use in existing building designs, and assessment of the new flooring’s interaction with the rest of a building’s structural systems. This project aligns smartly with CPF’s vision: to provide the AEC industry with a better way to design and build.
The funding partners for this Phase 2 effort include: CPF, AISC, Magnusson Klemencic Associates Foundation, Nucor,Schuff Steel, Herrick Steel, Cives Steel Company, Atlas Tube, Owen Steel Company, and Metals Fab.
