New Study Underway to Investigate Headed Shear Stud Strength Near Slab Edges

The goal of this research sponsored by AISC and SDI is to investigate the effects of small edge distance (perpendicular to the direction of applied shear) and pour stops on the strength of headed shear studs. This is important because AISC 360 currently does not provide a minimum edge distance for steel anchors installed in the ribs of cold-formed steel deck. The study consists of 41 pushout tests with two commonly used edge details having either 20 gage pour stop or 3/16 in. bent plate, or without pour stops, and variations in stud distance from the slab edge. The first 17 tests have been completed, and the remainder are underway. Preliminary tests show generally positive results when the pour stop or bent plate are left in place.
